We Meet You Where You Are
Intergenerational trauma refers to trauma that does not end with the people who lived through it directly. Its effects can move through families and communities, then shape later generations through stress responses, attachment patterns, family roles, silence, fear, and beliefs about safety, trust, and survival.
This kind of trauma often begins in large scale or prolonged harm, such as residential schools, colonial violence, genocide, war, forced displacement, the Holocaust, and racial discrimination.
Since these patterns shape personality, a person may come across as guarded, overly independent, reactive, perfectionistic, or emotionally shut down, when in reality these responses developed as forms of survival.
Here and Now Approach
Our therapists are trained in CBT, DBT, Somatic Experiencing, and bring a trauma-informed lens to every session. Each plan is tailored to your patterns and goals. We also have South Asian therapists on our team who bring cultural lived experience into their work.
If any of these feel familiar:
Switching off thoughts feels difficult almost every day
Social situations often end in self-doubt and replay
Setting impossibly high expectations for yourself
Saying no brings guilt, so you de-prioritize yourself
Muscles feel tense or the body feels locked up
Hard conversations get mentally rehearsed well in advance
Incomplete sleep is a nightly struggle
A racing heart, shallow breathing, or persistent restlessness
Build a steadier relationship with yourself and the life you are creating.

Questions About Anxiety Therapy
-
Anxiety tends to show up more in those with a history of childhood trauma, chronic stress, or unresolved emotional experiences. Personality wise, people with highly perceptive, emotionally reactive, or self-critical traits are more likely to experience it, though it can develop across all personality types.
-
No. A formal diagnosis is not required to begin therapy. Many clients sign up recognizing patterns such as persistent worry, difficulty setting boundaries, or tension that affects daily life. If those experiences feel familiar, therapy is a relevant and appropriate place to start.
-
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is the most well-researched approach for anxiety, with strong clinical evidence supporting its effectiveness across anxiety disorders. It helps you identify and shift unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours. We also integrate DBT for emotional regulation, ACT for psychological flexibility, Somatic Experiencing for nervous system regulation, and IFS to explore the deeper parts driving anxious responses.
-
Most clients see meaningful progress within 8 to 20 sessions, depending on the complexity of what they are working through. CBT tends to be more structured and focused, often showing results in 5 to 15 sessions. Your therapist at Here and Now Therapy will discuss the timeline during the first session.
-
Here and Now Therapy provides official receipts for all sessions, which you can submit directly to your insurance provider in Ontario. Most extended health plans that cover psychotherapy reimburse sessions without issue. We recommend confirming your specific coverage with your provider before beginning.
